Government audiors have concluded the EPA broke the law when it used social media to promote public support for its controversial Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule. Federal laws prohibit federal agencies from engaging in lobbying and propaganda, but that is the exact finding by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) .
The New York Times, who's initial story on the EPA's aggressive social media campaign tactics triggered the investigation, reports the GAO found the EPA engaged in "covert propaganda" in violation of the federal law. It also quotes Senator Jim Inhofe, R-OK) as saying, "GAO's finding confirms what I have long suspected, that EPA will go to extreme lenghts and even violate the law to promote its activits environmentla agenda."
